Today, Grupo Bimbo announced the implementation of new vehicle technologies and green procurement programs which will meet with the highest sustainability standards in the industry.
During the Second Grupo Bimbo Sustainability Event, held at its production plant in Azcapotzalco, the Company received the Clean Transport Acknowledgement granted by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT, for its acronym in Spanish). During the last three years, Grupo Bimbo has voluntarily participated in this initiative with substantial results, such as a 76% fuel consumption reduction of its vehicles, which avoided the emission of 10,000 tons of CO2 into the environment.
Daniel Servitje, Grupo Bimbo CEO, received the acknowledgement for the Company’s leadership in the development of programs to increase the productivity of its operations around the fundamental axis of sustainability. Marcelo Ebrard, Mayor of Mexico City, attended the event, together with Juan Rafael Elvira, Secretary of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT, for its acronym in Spanish).
Daniel Servitje looked satisfied with the commitments the Company entered into throughout the years, relating to sustainability and the transition towards a greener economy. He highlighted the importance of signing the “Agreement for a Sustainable Mexico”, a projects that joins the efforts of companies, governments and society, through important academic institutions, in order to build and establish indicators to help the private sector move towards corporate sustainability.
The CEO of Grupo Bimbo explained a series and profound actions that will integrate sustainability in each of the activities along the value chain. Given the impact required in this first implementation stage, the decision was to start with the development of activities pertaining to vehicle technologies and green procurement.
Hence, during the event, an announcement was made on the development of a Supplier Code of Conduct for Sustainability, with the purpose to engage suppliers in assuming their environmental responsibility in the management of their operations. Initially, this Code will be for wood and palm oil suppliers, that are to guarantee 100% compliance with sustainable practices.
On his part, Rosalío Rodriguez, Director de Grupo Bimbo Operations Vice-President, described the environmental benefits of the programs on vehicle technologies implemented. With the renewal of 1,166 Mercedes Benz, Fiat and Nissan vehicles, there will be greater fuel efficiency, shorter routes, maximum use of storage capacity and emissions reduction; all of which will be added to an important investment in distribution networks simulation and optimization.
Grupo Bimbo has taken its sustainability programs to other countries where it is present; such is the case of Argentina, Brazil, Peru and Venezuela, where transport improvements have resulted in better the indicators.
The Second Grupo Bimbo Sustainability Event is held on the month when the Company celebrates its 66th Anniversary. Daniel Servitje highlighted the importance of this new stage in its operations, marked by the implementation of concrete actions in areas of great impact for the environment, and expressed the conviction to continue traveling in the right course to place sustainability at the center of market-decisions.
