The Bimbo Villahermosa plant received, for a second time, the Environmental Excellence Award granted by the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT, for its acronym in Spanish) through the Attorney's Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA, for its acronym in Spanish) due to the continuous improvement of bakery’s environmental performance, its exemplary commitment to the protection of the environment and evident social responsibility to the community.
This acknowledgement is the result of environmental actions that the plant carries out in its operations. Outstanding are the reduction of energy and water consumption and solid waste generation, and a water treatment plant amongst others.
The Environmental Excellence Award bestowed by PROFEPA, seeks to promote environmental leadership in Mexico and encourage the implementation of forefront sustainable practices among the industries, as well as their corporate social responsibility to the communities with which they interact. Since 2001, Grupo Bimbo started its path with the Industria Limpia (Clean Industry) certification of its operations, currently having 32 plants in the program.
Grupo Bimbo is a Mexican company seeking to continuously improve its environmental management and the use of new technologies, focusing its efforts on four action lines: reduction of its carbon and water footprint, the comprehensive waste management and the preservation of natural capital. It also has the objective to strengthen an environmental culture throughout the value chain.
Mr. José Luis Álvarez Hernández, Bimbo Operations Vice-President received the award in an event hosted by SEMARNAT, with the participation of Rafael Pacchiano Alamán, Minister of the Environment and Natural Resources; Doctor Guillermo Haro Belchez, Environmental Protection General Attorney among others.
