Today, the Federal Attorney’s Office for Environmental Protection (PROFEPA, Procuraduría Federal de Protección al Ambiente) ?a body of the Ministry of the Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT, Secretaría del Medio Ambiente y Recursos Naturales)? acknowledged Grupo Bimbo and the second generation of 11 of its most important suppliers in the Country for having successfully finished the Environmental Leadership for Competitiveness Program.
The purpose of this program is to make companies more competitive through eco-efficient projects. This time, Bimbo’s Procurement Team participated in designing a project geared to improve its processes. Similarly, the 11 suppliers of Grupo Bimbo that participated in the program presented their projects, which reassert their commitment as companies engaged in caring for and protecting the environment.
Through the projects drafted and implemented by Grupo Bimbo and its 11 suppliers, they will significantly reduce their water consumption, use electric power more efficiently and avoid generating waste, as well as reducing considerably the materials used throughout the value chain. This implies an important decrease of their environmental impact, and at the same time, an increase their competitiveness.
Hence, the projects presented will enable saving 244 thousand 016 cubic meters of water annually, enough to supply 445 families with this vital fluid. Also, 16 million, 856 thousand 999 Kw/h of energy will no longer be consumed, which is the energy required by 5 thousand 810 households a year. As to fuel, savings will amount to 19 thousand 154 liters of gasoline, and slightly over 680 cubic meters of natural gas, preventing the emission of 53.45 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere per year, which is equivalent to the emissions of 1,653 compact cars. Additionally, 996.6 tons of waste will no longer be generated, which is amount of waste generate by 2 thousand 730 city-dwellers a year. For Grupo Bimbo and its 11 participating suppliers the foregoing equates to annual savings of $65 million 607 thousand 730 pesos.
When presenting the official acknowledgement Mr. Jesús Antonio Ibarra Cerecer, General Director of Audit Planning and Concentration of PROFEPA, pointed out the importance of the private sector’s participation in these endeavors driven by the Federal Government in order to foster the protection of the environment. And concluded by saying, “I appreciate and congratulate Grupo Bimbo and its suppliers for demonstrating with deeds their commitment to ecology and the protection of the environment”.
