Today on World Recycling Day—commemorated by UNESCO since 2005—we like to remember the importance that our “grain of wheat” adds.

We’ll tell you what our goals are plus major outcomes.

At Grupo Bimbo we reiterate our commitment to the environment. In 2025 100% of our packaging will be recyclable, compostable and/or biodegradable. Additionally, we are continuing to develop technologies to optimize our packaging and reduce our plastics use.

At the current time, more than 90% of our packaging is recyclable. Significantly, we’re pushing recycling projects and materials reduction to minimize the quantity of “virgin” materials in our packaging. This is all with no compromise to our products’ safety.   

Thanks to these new package designs, since 2010 we’ve been able to diminish some 3.6 million kilograms of plastic.

On the global level we’ve reached 95% recycling in our operations. 53 of our plants reached zero wastes to sanitary landfills.

In Mexico—since 2016—we collaborated with ECOCE to promote a plan for managing materials in cooperation with other companies to incentivize post-consumer recycling. This favors its collection for correct recycling and/or co-processing.

Thanks to that initiative more than 4400 metric tons of flexible film was gathered in 2020 from all associates.

In Spain and Portugal we also kicked off programs called “Ecoembes” and “Ponto Verde,” additionally driven by their respective home-country governments. In Brazil we participated in the DAMF program. In Canada we did our part in six post-consumption programs. In the US, with help from Tetracycle, we’ve picked up more than 6.5 million Little Bites bags since we joined the program. In Chile and Colombia we continue to participate in pilots driven by industrial associations from both countries.

As well, during the past twelve months we participated in the second consecutive year of a recycling synergy exercise called “Reciclamanía,” collecting and recycling more than a thousand kilograms of wastes including our packaging and flexible wrapping in partnership with Walmart and Ecolana.

Finally, in  Mexico we have realized a circular economic exercise with post-consumption packages. An example was manufacture of 250 exportation pallets alongside 20% of wrappings.
