"The Clean Transportation Program designed by the Mexican Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) with the support of the Mexican Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) aims to make freight and passenger transport more efficient, competitive and environmentally friendly through strategies and technologies that help companies reduce their fuel consumption and emissions"
The Mexican Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources (SEMARNAT) with the support of the Mexican Secretariat of Communications and Transportation (SCT) designed the Clean Transportation Program to promote a reduction in the consumption of fuel and CO2 emissions through the adoption of strategies and technologies. Through its Bimbo and Barcel organizations, Grupo Bimbo took part in this program for an additional year, achieving outstanding results for transportation in 2019, and was therefore recognized for its environmental performance.
The Clean Transportation Program is voluntary and is based on the public-private alliance called Smartway, developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). This program evaluates participating companies’ efficiencies and reductions in the use of fuel and CO2 emissions, assigning a score that determines the companies’ environmental performance.
The program promotes the implementation of strategies and technologies that help companies make more efficient use of fuel, generating savings in fuel use and consequently reducing air pollution. Some of the strategies include: fleet renewal and maintenance, operator training in eco-driving, maximum speed regulation and fuel control. Notable among the technologies promoted are: aerodynamic improvements, low rolling resistance tires, more advanced lubricants and emission-control devices.
Grupo Bimbo has been involved since the launch of the program 10 years ago in Mexico. It collaborated in the pilot test that served as the basis for the current program now celebrating its tenth anniversary this year, awarding recognition to companies in three categories: Users, Logistics and Transportation. Bimbo and Barcel participated in the Transportation category.
The rating scale ranges from “Good Environmental Performance” to “Very Good Environmental Performance” to “Excellent Environmental Performance.” Bimbo and Barcel earned a score of 1.25, which means that the company has earned the highest recognition, “Excellent Environmental Performance.”
This achievement is the result of the efforts and dedication of all the employees in the transportation divisions, as well as the distribution strategy, aligned with Grupo Bimbo’s environmental management, which places particular emphasis on improving the energy efficiency of its transport fleet.
